Step-tember 2018

It’s back, bigger and better than last year! The annual pedometer challenge will be called Step-tember this year, and it’s being expanded to include competitors from our paid and unpaid workforce, our valued clients, and our clients' families. The competition will run for three weeks from Monday the 3rd of September through until Sunday the 23rd of September 2018.

You are all invited to step up!

We know getting active is good for our wellbeing, and our community's wellbeing is important to Vision Australia. The competition is really a way for us to become more active, monitor our activity levels, have fun, and to achieve greater activity levels and better health week to week. Yes there will be some prizes awarded, but the main thing we want is people to be getting out and about, increasing their activity levels and enjoying the competition with their colleagues and family.

Last year Vision Australia had almost 250 participants in the challenge, who walked a total of 29,523 kilometres. This year we want you all to smash these records!

The best part about this competition is you don’t have to be the fittest person to compete, you just have to be prepared to walk, or undertake activities that can be translated into steps, and have the will to go that little bit further.

How it works

The Step Challenge runs for three weeks, from Monday 3rd September to Sunday 23rd September 2018. It is for teams of four to six people. You can register as a team of clients, clients' family members, Vision Australia workforce members or a mixture of these groups.

The goals of the challenge are simple – join a team, get active and do as many steps as you can in three weeks. You will need to track the number of steps you take and log them with us at the end of each week. The three teams with the highest average number of steps win! Spot prizes will also be awarded just for giving it a go! Other competitions will run throughout the event and these will be announced shortly.

How to register

Registrations for Step-tember 2018 have now closed. Please email whs@visionaustralia.org if you have questions about the registration of your team. You need to be aged over 18 years to participate in the Vision Australia Step Challenge.

What you need to participate

You will need to BYO pedometer or step tracker. We have pulled together a handy

guide on accessible pedometers

as a starting point. Most modern smart phones have step trackers built in, and there are some fun apps you can download as well. Please check with your phone provider and any downloaded app, to ensure you understand any data usage charges that may apply in your situation. The Vision Store are offering a discounted talking pedometer for $20 from now until the end of the competition, if you want a non-phone based option.

Along with a step tracker, all you need is a pair of shoes and a can do attitude! We encourage everyone to give it a go and start at their own level.
